and Wendy Crumpler
The range of books
available for Adobe Photoshop can nearly fill of a small library.
The quality and target audience for each of these books vary
widely. Photoshop 5 Artistry, by Barry Haynes and Wendy
Crumpler, is not a regurgitation of the Photoshop Manual,
nor is it a shallow "gee-whiz" effects guide. It is an unpretentious,
straight-forward explanation of Photoshop's features that
answers every serious user's questions about the program.
Masking, color correction,
pre-press and print preparation, memory allocation, and many
other problems are detailed with text-book precision yet worded
in a way that even a novice can understand. Each chapter is
filled will charts, screen shots, and diagrams (all in full
color) to reinforce and clarify complex topics. For example,
Photoshop 5 Artistry has an excellent discussion of
Histograms and Levels, teaching you how to "read" a scanned
photo and how to apply color corrections to it based only
on studying its histogram. Haynes and Crumpler set themselves
apart from many other authors by focusing on the applications
and theories behind Photoshop's abilities, not simply listing
definitions.
For $55, you get expert
guidance, educational material that's well above the average,
invaluable Photoshop know-how, a full color 350+ page book
and a CD. While this book is neither print- nor Web-specific,
there's a good chance that even a Photoshop expert can learn
something new.
